A couple really quick updates since I’m busy at work right now. I’ve added a few small features to the website. First, you can now subscribe to comments on posts via email. I’ve actually had a few requests by technies in the last little while for this, and I think it’s a good idea. That way you don’t have to poll the website looking for new comments all the time. Second, I’ve updated a few RSS feeds, and plan to add autodetecting category feeds at some point too.
In addition, I’m going to completely rebuild the website from the ground up in the next week or so. I’ve started prototyping a few things with Dale, and I think the new version is going to be really representative of me, of my photography, of the events I’ve covered, and some of the skills I’ve acquired along the way with regards to Javascript and what not. I’m going to be moving the blog back to /blog, and having a dynamic landing page with integration with web 2.0 websites, aspects of my blog, and other various aspects of my persona. Plus, it will validate against W3C standards (this one once did too, but has been quickly hacked too many times) :P
Can’t wait to see the changes you have coming! My blog previous to going to WordPress was validated for XHTML Strict and CSS. Since going to WordPress I find it is not as compliant and that’s sad. Every time a site isn’t validated properly a little monkey gets hit by a bus!
Tell the techies to subscribe to your rss comment feed ;)
I actually like the email solution better myself. I hate having my RSS reader cluttered up with random feeds. Plus, I still want to contribute to a post even if a comment is penned on it a year from now, where had it been in my RSS reader, I probably would have toasted it by then.
I’d have to agree. I like the email solution. I’m the kind of person that goes through old entries and comments on them if I feel like it’s called for. In fact, I did that just yesterday on your blog, a couple entries from a year or so ago. You never would have known without a trusty email. :)
gonna. be. rad.
Thanks Duane.
The reason I like the email route as opposed to an RSS feed is that:
1) I don’t want to subscribe to a single RSS feed for one post just cause I commented on that post - like Duane said - that would clutter up my reader and I’d eventually get the urge to get rid of it, especially if the feed is quite for a long time
2) I don’t want to subscribe to a full comment feed for the whole site, seems like overkill
3) I tend to check my email more often than I check my RSS reader. :)
Looking forward to the new site.
Hi Duane,
it`s a really good idea to use the email solution. I`m looking forward to the other changes coming up here :)
And i hope between all your great work and job you will have some time for your viper cache solution to wordpress. I know, the lack of time hits us all, but i`m just really interested in it. ;)
Have a nice day
Chris
