Shaw Cable Internet Update

Posted on January 12th, 2010 in Personal :: 1 Comment

It's been over a month of me trying to get some resolution to my problems with my Internet at home, and I'm happy to say that I'm a step nearer today. I imagine it's due to everyone's help on Twitter to be honest, since a few people made a few calls internally on my behalf. So thanks if you helped out. I got a call a while ago from someone within Shaw who was informed of my problems. Right away, she said she was going to make some price adjustments to reflect the fact that my service has ...

Why I Hate Shaw Cable

Posted on January 4th, 2010 in Technology :: 11 Comments

Seriously. It's a massive slap in the face to be on hold for over an hour with a company while they're playing on-hold advertisements talking about how much better their customer service is than everyone else's. My internet has been slowing down consistently month after month to the point where it's become nearly unusable. I'm paying for one of their higher end packages which is supposed to give up to 15 Mbps downstream and up to 1 Mbps downstream. Here's what it's been like for the last few weeks: Right now I'm getting 4 Mbps downstream, and ...

Today The Internet Made Me Angry

Posted on December 9th, 2009 in Bits and Bites :: 3 Comments

It doesn't happen very often, but today was one of them. The main reason I was frustrated today is because more and more people seem to be treating each other (or at least me) as simply a marketing target. I used to get inquiries on my site of a personal nature via my contact form. That still happens, and I always enjoy that when it happens (in fact, I think that's one of the biggest positives about blogging -- being exposed to and forming relationships with people you may never meet), but more and more I'm getting ...

The Case Of The Disappearing Bandwidth

Posted on March 17th, 2008 in Blogging, Technology, Vancouver :: 8 Comments

This morning I went to use my internet and was redirected to a page that indicated I had exceeded my bandwidth for the month. Granted, with my recent purchase of Apple TV, I have been using more bandwidth. But as far as I'm concerned it's not anything crazy (the odd TV show), and it's strange to me that I hit my limit. I upgraded to the next plan up which is a small SoHo package for now. The part that concerns me is that my upstream bandwidth was larger than my downstream, which makes no sense at all ...

Digg Categories In Need Of A Serious Overhaul

Posted on February 5th, 2008 in Around The Web, Technology :: 4 Comments

I love Digg. I surf it at least a couple times a day, usually when I'm bored, sitting a work waiting for something to compile. I would say that without a doubt the majority of my "cool" news actually comes from Digg. Lately I've begun submitting the odd story on my own to Digg. No matter how many times I try to submit something though, I always seem to get stuck on the same old problem -- what category does the story fit in? The main problem I think is that Digg categories ...

Web Hosting Experiment

Posted on February 4th, 2008 in Around The Web, Blogging, Research :: 12 Comments

Hey guys. I want to do a fairly simple web experiment this week. I want to try to assess real-world uptime and latency for a bunch of popular hosting sites. I need a bunch of volunteers to help out. Basically all I'll need you to do is upload a file to your root directory and allow me to ping it from time to time to do some measurements. I'll tabulate the data next week and put it online for everyone to see. So, if you can help out, drop me a comment and let ...

Where The Internet Stops And My Blog Begins

Posted on February 3rd, 2008 in Around The Web, Blogging :: 3 Comments

So here's some food for thought for the blogosphere. Lately I've been pondering a few of the legal aspects of the Internet, namely what it is we are all allowed to do, and what it is some companies think we shouldn't be allowed to. Let me give you a use-case to demonstrate what I'm talking about. Photo by Ben Sheldon on Flickr Let's say I set up a blog, and I'm checking out Flickr and I see a photo I like. Let's say for a second that the CC license is set in such a way that I ...
