Birthdays, Pool Parties, and Wineries

Update – Matthew Good release his first single, ‘Born Losers’, on iTunes the other day. It’s currently sitting at #11 on iTunes, and should hopefully break into the top ten sometime today.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve had an upcoming weekend that I was extremely excited about. But this next weekend promises to be full of fun and adventure.

On Friday afternoon I’ll be boarding a plane and heading down to Las Vegas to spend an evening hanging out with my friend Matt on his birthday. Matt’s currently working on his tan out in the Las Vegas suburbs, and has decided to treat a few friends and fans to a small, acoustic show while the sun sets over the Las Vegas desert.

Matt’s even going to spin Hospital Music and give everyone a listen to the new album. I’m bringing all my camera gear, so I’m hoping to get some great shots of everyone around the pool, and of Matt treating everyone to a live performance. I’m also really excited to see Vegas in general, since I’ve never had the opportunity to go. I’ll try and pull off a few HDR shots of the Vegas strip or the sun setting over the pool.

Rebecca ( will be bringing a laptop and hopefully live blogging some of the event for the people who can’t make it. Her and I are both staying at the Luxor hotel, and will probably check out the Las Vegas strip after Matt’s birthday party. My jaw nearly hit the floor the other day when I found out you can walk around Vegas drinking beer in public — I can only imagine the pure joy that comes from taking outside photos and drinking beer at the same time.

Saturday morning I will be hopping on a plane and heading for California and the west-coast sunshine. I’ll be spending a few days hanging out with my friends Jason and Sheila, bouncing around taking photos and hopefully drinking a few beers in the sun. We might even take a full day and head up to Napa Valley to check out some wineries. I’ll post another entry on Friday with links to my flickr set for anyone interested in checking out the weekend adventures as they unfold. I’m really looking forward to it.

** Update: I normally borrow my friend’s 24-70 f/2.8L lens for trips like this, but he’s using it this weekend. So, I asked around for a place to rent equipment from. Leo’s Camera in Vancouver has offered to let me have the 24-70 f/2.8L for the entire long weekend and only charge me the cost of renting it one day. Thanks guys.
