Favourite Movie Scene #1: Vanilla Sky Ending

Last modified on December 13th, 2007

No, the number 1 doesn’t mean this is my all time favourite movie scene, because I plan to post a lot of these over the next few weeks, and I haven’t even thought about ranking them yet. However, I’ve always really liked this one scene. I could care less if you hate Tom Cruise or think his religion is bogus (even though it is) — this scene is pretty high up there in terms of cinematic perfection in my mind.

As a whole, Vanilla Sky wasn’t that great, but this last scene, with the music, the wisps of romance, the vibrant vanilla sky, the New York landscape, and the thought of what it must be like to suddenly realize your life is nothing more than a dream makes for a powerful ending IMO – the realization that everything you ever loved died a long time ago along with the excitement of having a second chance at life.

Maybe some of that is the hopeless romantic in me, but this is one of the few scenes that I can watch over and over again.

Feel free to chime in on what you thought about the movie or the scene.

Well, I liked the whole movie!!!lol But I do agree this is the best scene in the movie. Especially the line…

“Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around..”

    How true that is…

And the line that cemented my kinship with my best friend Dan, at the lowest point in my life…

“I’ll see you in another life..when we are both cats..”

Now I have to go watch the movie again… 🙂

A lot of people have bashed that “when we are both cats” line, but seriously, it totally follows along with what she said earlier in the movie, and it’s something shared between them. It’s basically cinematic pillow talk, which is why I like it.

Never seen it! But that ending (no warning for spoilers?!) it is really beautiful as an isolated scene, for sure.

  4. The original, Spanish film, Open Your Eyes[imdb] was much, much better. Plus, there are boobies.

Yah I’ve heard that. It’s on my list of movies to watch in the immediate future.
