Laptop Bag

Last modified on February 25th, 2008

I’m in the market for a new laptop bag. I currently have a backpack which holds my laptop and my camera gear, but when I don’t carry my camera gear I find the bag is fairly big and bulky. So, I’d like to pick up a nice, slim laptop bag that goes over my shoulder.

I googled a bit this morning trying to find recommendations where to go, but most of those sites just talked about bags and didn’t really point me in any useful directions. Rebecca gave me the name of a site on Robson, but when I went by this morning they were still closed.

Can anyone recommend a good place to buy a laptop bag? I’d like something a little more modern and less London Drugs-like.

I have a large collection of bags. I have a thing for messenger bags in particular. I would reccomend checking out either the Crumpler line of bags or Timbuk2.

Crumpler makes messenger-styled bags for both photo gear and laptops. They also have backpacks. You can order Crumpler online and they ship out of the TO area.

Timbuk2 makes messenger bags for laptops. They have backpacks too, but I’m not too crazy about the styling.

But if you want to SEE what these bags are like first, I think some of the better camera/computer shops will carry these bags.

I love Crumpler as well…they have all kinds of different sizes and colors – check out the full line of laptop bags.

Also check out my blog post about them – you can see my tan medium ‘skivy‘ laptop bag in the photos.

I carried my ‘considerable embarrassment‘ bag at NV that easily fit my Air (or your MBP) and my camera (one lens) and stuff….but it’s not a camera bag so the non-laptop parts weren’t padded. I got it from Best Buy where it was on clearance.

There’s a shop with super funky bags on Cambie and um, I think 14th or 13th.

Search for ‘hacker bag’, the company that does them (http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/backpacks/hacker) has a few that show of photo-gear-ability as well as laptop-ability as well as scalability for the gear in them. HTH.

Yay! I’m not the only one with this “illness”! Here’s just a sampling of what I have:

I’ve also got 2 of Crumpler’s camera bags, 4 Million and 6 Million Dollar home, plus one of the buckets to fit into the Dreadful Embarassment. AND, I’ve got the King Single, which I usually use to tote around my work laptop.

Yes, I think I have an illness.

Maybe check out Jack Spade as well…http://www.jackspade.com/shop/home.php?cat=306 he’s got some nice designer stuff, and there are shops around that sell it.

Haha Eva…we should start a support group!

If you don’t mind shopping in person, Design House in Yaletown has a pretty nice selection of cooler bags (of course a little pricier, esp. Jack Spade)…

    Hahaha! Maybe!

The Dreadful Embarassment plus bucket was a good combo for the 3 week trip I did late last year to Asia. It held my 14″ iBook, DSLR and a couple of lenses. It got a bit snug when I picked up a nice 18-200mm VR lens in Hong Kong. 🙂

  11. I love crumpler bags and cases and would highly recommmend them to anyone… however, no idea where you can find one in Canada!

I usually ordered straight from the Crumpler website (www.crumpler.ca). I know that Vistek and Henry’s also offer some of the Crumpler bags for sale through their website.

@Eva there is a glorious Crumpler store in Toronto I hope to visit some day.

I have a ridiculously comfortable backpack that I bought at Best Buy, but then again, it’s not the style you want I think. But I found some good ones there.

By the way, it was such a pleasure meeting you in person at the Vancouver Bloggers Meetup!

    All the best.

@John Biehler That could prove to be a dangerous proposition! At least for my wallet anyways. 😀

@Duane I hope you let us know what you decide on. 🙂
