Peter Jackson To Produce "The Hobbit"

Last modified on December 18th, 2007

This is hot off the presses.

Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy “The Lord of the Rings.”

Peter Jackson is set to oversee the film adaptation of “The Hobbit.”

Jackson, who directed the “Rings” trilogy, will serve as executive producer for “The Hobbit.” A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after “Rings,” despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion — an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting “The Hobbit” 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.

I’m definitely glad that Peter Jackson is involved in this project. I think the potential to completely screw it up, especially given the commercial success of the first trilogy, is huge.

  1. I know Jackson was not at all looking forward to doing the Hobbit. He asked for a break before they made him start on another Tolkien project but I think after filming all of LoTR’s he never wanted to deal with hobbits again.

And honestly, can you blame him? That’s a lot of hours to spend staring at little people.

Yah I don’t blame him at all. Sounds like he’s not going to direct though, which should be less time consuming for him then.

i love that book so much, i normally don’t read books more than once but that is one i have read a couple of times.
i hope it is good, it makes sense for him to produce it.

I may actually go see a movie finally.

Oh great. My friends will be thrilled to hear about that…because now they’re gonna. I will go on and on about it until something more interesting comes along. I think it’s okay if Jackson is only producing…at least he will be there to keep them from screwing things up.
