Web Hosting Experiment

Last modified on February 4th, 2008

Hey guys. I want to do a fairly simple web experiment this week. I want to try to assess real-world uptime and latency for a bunch of popular hosting sites. I need a bunch of volunteers to help out. Basically all I’ll need you to do is upload a file to your root directory and allow me to ping it from time to time to do some measurements. I’ll tabulate the data next week and put it online for everyone to see.

So, if you can help out, drop me a comment and let me know:

  1. The name of your hosting company
  2. The address to your site
  3. Your email address where I can contact you about this

The more people the better. Thanks. I am currently on Media Temple and HostMonster, so I can represent those two.

I’m in….Bluehost.com hosts all my stuff currently.

  2. Hmm, spam filter may have eaten my previous post.

    Penmachine hosted at JaguarPC
Inside Home Recording also hosted at JaguarPC
Lip Gloss and Laptops hosted at GoDaddy

All shared hosting servers. Add dot-com to each name to get there (maybe the filter will be okay with that 🙂 ).

  3. Not a problem.
I use http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net for all my sites.

Would help, but I’m Hostmonster too. Feel free to get a hold of me if you want to try hitting more than one server there.

  5. Jordan Ogren says:

    Hosting: http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net

    My Website: http://www.JordanOgren.com

    Jordan [at] Jordanogren.com

    Give me a shout.

I could get in on this, GregCorp and miscellani.ca are hosted on Dreamhost shared hosting.

Duane – I’m hosting on my own server in my basement – but I’d love to see how it stacks up against a paid service. Let me know if you can include me or not…

The company where I host my blog (linked in the website field) isn’t big, but it seems pretty darn reliable. I’m curious how it stacks up against the big guys. The host is http://www.theorem.ca if you want to add it to your experiment.

I can also set you up with ValueWeb.
