WordCamp Whistler Update

 Journal

I met with Rebecca and John tonight and we started finalizing the plans for WordCamp Whistler. We’re hoping to nail down a venue in the next week or so, at which time we’ll open up official registration. Given that we want to make the event as awesome and as interesting as possible, we’re going to be charging a small admission for the event. In addition, we’ll also be accepting sponsorship from a few organizations, which will hopefully cover the costs of the venue, and the social. Stay tuned in the next week or so for some official announcements. As of now, the date is still set for January 24th, 2009 up in Whistler, BC, Canada. We’ll probably schedule the event to start around 10am or so, which will allow people to commute up from Vancouver that morning. We’re hoping to invite some well known speakers to the event to share […]

WordCamp Whistler

 Journal

Yes, that’s right people. How does going up to Whistler and spending a weekend boarding/skiing and talking about everyone’s favourite blogging engine, WordPress, sound? I suggested this briefly on Twitter tonight, and immediately got a message from Rebecca along the lines of “hell ya!” I emailed a hotel already tonight at the heart of the village to see what kind of group rates we could get in December or January. I think it would be awesome to go up for a weekend, hold a WordCamp during the day, and do afternoon/night skiing in the off time, or on the second day. Rebecca and I helped organize the last WordCamp a few weeks ago, and it was a ton of fun. Given that it was a great experience and everyone learned a lot, I’m definitely interested in helping get this event off of the ground. What better way to talk about […]

BarCamp Vancouver, WordCamp, PhotoCamp, And BeerCamp

 Journal

Yes people, it’s that time again. BarCamp Vancouver is only a few hours from kicking off down at WorkSpace in GasTown. For those of you not familiar with it, BarCamp is an unconference where people get together and determine the topics at the conference the day of the event. Everyone who attends is potentially a speaker, so it’s a great forum for learning new things and being expose to new ideas. Rebecca Bollwitt and I are organizing a session of WordCamp tomorrow down in Granville Island, which should be a lot of fun. I currently have a desk full of WordPress swag to give out tomorrow (courtesy of the guys and gals at Automattic), so be sure to pick up some WordPress goodies. Also, Rebecca and I will probably do a brief WordPress related social Saturday around dinner time somewhere in Granville Island, so flag one of us down if […]

WordCamp Vancouver

 Journal

I recently had the priviledge of attending WordCamp San Francisco, a conference dedicated to WordPress enthusiasts in the Bay Area. It was a great time, and I met a lot of great people. Next month, Rebecca Bollwitt and I are organizing the WordCamp Vancouver event to coincide with BarCamp on Sept 27th. For those of you who are unfamiliar with BarCamp, it’s a day long conference where the participants, first thing in the morning, decide the format and the topics for the rest of the day. Everyone who attends has the potential to be a speaker, and it’s a lot of fun. This year, the event is over on Granville Island, which is a pretty, picturesque environment for a technology conference. Rebecca and I have the first slot of the day in the big room, which should hopefully house about 100 people or so. If you have a topic you’re […]

The End Of WordCamp San Francisco

 Journal

Well, the event is all over now, and I officially have a small hangover to remember it by. I met a lot of really great people last night at the social, and it was a ton of fun. I have yet to meet a blogger I didn’t like, and last night was no exception. Everyone was friendly, and a pleasure to hang out and drink beer with. The social event was at Pete’s Tavern, which is conveniently located directly across from the baseball stadium. The bar was completely open as were the pool tables upstairs, so there was lots to do. I tried my best to walk around and meet as many people as I could, but I’m sure I missed a few. I actually went down to WordCamp not really expecting to learn a great deal of information (since I try to keep up to date on everything I […]

My Seattle Adventure

 Journal

To say that yesterday was a rather crappy day would be an understatement. For several weeks now I’ve been planning on attending WordCamp in San Francisco. Since I’m paying for the trip out of my own pocket, I decided to try and be a bit more financially conscious than I usually am on trips. So I decided I would fly out of Seattle instead of Vancouver, which as it turns out was around $300 cheaper. I was actually looking forward to the drive, and burned myself a few CDs. I went into work for a few hours in the morning, and then hit the streets heading for Seattle. Somewhere around White Rock, I noticed a really busted up portion of the highway. It seemed like there were grooves in it, and I was having a hard time keeping my car straight. When I started smelling burnt rubber, I took a […]

WordCamp San Francisco Coming Up – Updated

 Journal

Updated – I booked a flight and a hotel for this weekend, so I’ll definitely be at WordCamp on Saturday. I love San Francisco, and I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone in the Bay Area. If you see me on Saturday, feel free to flag me down and say hi. Drop a comment if you’ll be there, and I’ll try to find you! This Saturday is WordCamp down in San Francisco. I registered to attend, although the jury is still out on whether or not I’m going to go. Flights aren’t that expensive to be honest, but accommodation is kind of a killer considering how much traveling I’ve done lately. I’d really like to attend since WordPress is obviously pretty integral in my day to day life, but I’m not sure it’s going to happen unless I can find somewhere cheap to stay for two nights. Boris is trying […]

Entry #2: WordCamp San Francisco

 Journal

San Francisco is without a doubt one of my favourite cities in the world. It’s situated right on the Pacific Ocean, nestled snugly between Marin Country and Oakland. While Napa Valley is usually extremely hot, San Francisco boasts a fairly moderate climate, with sunshine occurring on most days of the year. In August, there’s going to be a WordCamp session down in San Francisco. Given that I’m a huge WordPress advocate, and that I love the Bay Area, I registered today and made the quick, impromptu decision to attend. Flights out of Vancouver are around $400, but are only around $250 return out of Seattle. So I think I’ll try and grab a late night flight on Friday and spend the weekend down in San Francisco. Lloyd Budd is also heading down, so undoubtedly I’ll run into him during the event. Of course, Matt Mullenweg will be there too, and […]

WordCamp Vancouver Wrap-Up

 Journal

Last night was Vancouver’s first ever WordCamp down at the Network Hub downtown. I got there about 15 minutes early, and was fairly amazed that it was already standing (or sitting, if you will) room only. There were so many people in fact, that they wrapped around the edges into locations where you couldn’t even see the projector. Clearly Vancouver has a very large and supportive WordPress community. Photo by John Biehler The open-source community in Vancouver is pretty amazing. Whenever I travel and tell others this, they are always suspect, like it would somehow be impossible for our little corner of the world to have any talent or innovation. And yet, I’m constantly amazed at the level of depth, the passion, and the good nature of most people in the Vancouver blogging community. A big thanks to the Network Hub and Tazzu for organizing the whole event, and for […]
